Gorge walking for beginners: what to expect

Gorge walking offers an exciting blend of adventure, challenge and achievement. This blog explains everything you need to know as a beginner.

Gorge walking offers an exciting blend of adventure, challenge and achievement. You’ll explore hidden waterways, splash through crystal-clear pools and tackle natural obstacles as you make your way upstream through beautiful gorges in Monmouthshire and the Brecon Beacons.

Our guided gorge walking sessions introduce you to this exciting activity at a comfortable pace and discover the joy of conquering new challenges.

Most people can take part in gorge walking. Our experienced guides adapt each session to suit different abilities and comfort levels. We welcome families, groups of friends, corporate teams and solo adventurers aged ten and above. If you can walk for a couple of hours and fancy trying something new, gorge walking could be your next adventure.

Getting ready for your gorge walking adventure

You don’t need to be super-fit to enjoy gorge walking. A basic level of fitness that allows you to walk for two to three hours will serve you well. The ability to climb a few stairs without getting too out of breath is a good benchmark.

Before your session, get a good night’s sleep and eat a proper breakfast. Gorge walking uses energy, so you’ll want to start your day well-fuelled. Pack some snacks and water for during the activity. We build in regular breaks where you can refuel.

Mental preparation helps, too. Come with an open mind and be ready to try new things. Our experienced guides create a supportive atmosphere where you can push your boundaries at your own pace. There’s never pressure to do anything you’re not comfortable with.

So, bring a positive attitude and a sense of adventure.

You’ll probably get muddy.

You’ll definitely get wet.

But, most importantly, you’ll have fun.

Essential kit and equipment

We supply all the specialist equipment you’ll need for your gorge walking adventure.

This includes a warm wetsuit, protective helmet, buoyancy aid and sturdy walking boots. Our gear is high-quality, well-maintained and regularly checked to keep you safe and comfortable.

Under your wetsuit, wear swimwear or close-fitting shorts and a T-shirt. Bring a couple of pairs of thick socks, one for inside your wetsuit boots and a spare pair for afterwards. A towel and a complete change of clothes for after the activity are essential.

Pack any personal medication you might need and a water bottle. A small snack like a cereal bar or banana works well for keeping your energy levels up. Leave valuable items at home or in your car. Watches, jewellery and phones don’t mix well with gorge walking.

Safety first

Your safety guides everything we do. Our qualified guides hold extensive experience in gorge walking and outdoor leadership. They know the gorges intimately and check conditions before every session.

Each gorge walking experience starts with a thorough safety briefing. You’ll learn the correct techniques for moving through water, scrambling over rocks and supporting your fellow participants. Our guides demonstrate each skill and stay close by while you practice.

We use clear hand signals and simple voice commands that help everyone communicate effectively in the gorge environment. Your guide will explain how to move as a group, maintain safe distances and look out for each other.

Group sizes are kept manageable to ensure proper supervision. We position guides throughout the group – one leading and one supporting – so help is always nearby. This approach lets you focus on enjoying the experience while we take care of your safety.

Physical challenges you’ll face

Gorge walking involves moving upstream against the flow of water. You’ll start with basic water-walking techniques, learning to spot stable footing and navigate slippery rocks. Each step builds your confidence in reading the water and choosing safe routes.

The physical demands vary with the terrain. Some sections need careful footwork through shallow streams, while others involve climbing up small waterfalls or scrambling over boulders. Our guides show you the best hand and foot positions for each challenge.

Natural features in the gorge create exciting obstacles. You might crawl under overhanging rocks, slide down water-polished chutes or jump into deep pools. The water depth changes throughout the gorge, ranging from ankle-deep streams to deeper channels.

We plan routes that mix more manageable sections with more challenging ones, giving you time to rest between obstacles. The cold water can be tiring, but regular breaks help maintain your energy levels.

Your first gorge walking session

Your adventure starts at our meeting point, where you’ll meet your guides and fellow gorge walkers. During the welcome briefing, we explain what to expect and answer any questions you have. This initial chat helps everyone feel comfortable and gets the group connected.

Getting kitted up takes around 20 minutes. Our guides help you find the right size wetsuit and make sure all your safety equipment fits properly. We check everyone’s gear before heading to the gorge, adjusting straps and fastenings until everything sits just right.

At the water’s edge, you’ll learn the basics through simple exercises. Most people feel nervous at first, but your confidence will grow quickly as you master each new skill. We start in shallow water, practicing stable positions and movement techniques as a group.

Your guide will introduce more challenging sections as you progress, always matching the difficulty to your group’s abilities. Each new obstacle builds on skills you’ve already learned, creating a natural progression that helps everyone succeed at their own pace. The sense of achievement will grow with each challenge you overcome.

Making the most of your experience

Our guides will bring expert knowledge and enthusiasm to every session. Ask questions, seek advice and let them know how you’re feeling. We’re there to help you get the most from your adventure. Our local knowledge adds fascinating insights about the gorges and their formation.

Good group support makes gorge walking more enjoyable for everyone. Share encouragement, celebrate each other’s achievements and keep spirits high. Many participants find they build strong bonds with their fellow adventurers through mutual support.

We plan regular breaks throughout the session. Use these moments to catch your breath, have a drink and take in the stunning surroundings. Your guide will pick sheltered spots where you can rest comfortably and get ready for the next challenge.

Moving steadily and staying warm help you enjoy the experience. If you start feeling cold or tired, let your guide know. We can adjust the pace or suggest techniques to help you stay comfortable.

After your adventure

Take time to change into dry clothes and chat with your group about the experience. Many friendships form during these post-adventure moments.

Our guides will share tips about improving your technique if you’re keen to try gorge walking again. We offer different routes and difficulty levels for return visits, letting you build your skills and tackle new challenges.

Chat with your guide about other local gorges or different activities that match your interests. They can suggest options based on what you’ve enjoyed most about your session.
